One of my favorite things about turning bowls is watching curves emerge where there were only straight lines. The solid block of wood goes from chunky to elegant, grounded to light, with contours and negative spaces. The seams were just glue lines, and they’ve become striations. The resin was just a mess on top, and now it’s a throbbing ring of colored light. The grain was just annular rings, and now it’s intense pattern.

This piece opened the door to a huge new field of work for me, the Long Shadow Series. I saw what was happening at the top edge, and I thought, “what if I just give the sides more of an angle? I could stretch that color out.”
