The Open Book Series

In 2023 I made a series of wooden bowls and embroidered them with colored thread. The possibilities of layering, texture, geometry, and transparency were exciting, but I felt limited by the form. I played with several other kinds of volumes and saw the options open up wide. Too wide.

I needed some limits, so I set three rules:

    1. Each piece had to hang on a wall.
    2. Each piece had to include two half-circles joined at their straight edge, like an open book.
    3. Each piece had to include some pattern of colored thread and beads.

As will often happen, familiar forms emerged from the slow, intuitive process.  Domestic and soft things press against rational things. Gender-associated craft techniques live together and cooperate.
